For over 25 years, I have found joy in teaching literature and writing to children of all ages.  Throughout the years, I have been inspired by the insights and observations of countless students in the reading and writing workshop.   So often I have witnessed a deep wisdom rise up when a child connects with a great story, and, most especially, when a child writes his/her own story or poem or essay.  A great power rises up when we understand or uncover a narrative that speaks a truth about our individual and collective human experience.   

A decade ago, I became increasingly concerned about the attempt to eradicate creativity, wonder and imagination in the public-school system. This concern became the impetus of my mission. I wanted to learn more about the individual and collective stories of human consciousness. I wanted to learn more about the motifs, symbols and profound themes that had arisen in the writing of my young students. For when the muse touched them, my student’s writings had taken my breath away. Sometimes there was even what I would call something “spiritual” about their stories and poems. The essences of their narratives rose from such a deep place --and even --and sometimes especially—in the writings of the youngest children. My experiences with my students prompted me to seek a deeper understanding about the connection between psyche and storytelling. Although, in our popular culture, the word “divine” has become somewhat anachronistic, yet in truth, I had witnessed a glimpse of the “divine,”—something sacred that I recognized and honored--- in my student’s voices and stories. Therefore, it surely is no coincidence that as a writing teacher, I found myself on a metaphysical path. Eventually, I found an awakening and hence a new passion in the field of astrology.
